2024 Awards and Recognitions

Bi-annual Hall of Fame Award Presented to Dr. Darlene A. Sorrell

At age 10 she decided to be a dentist. Perhaps this correlated to her desire to have braces, which in a family of her size, was seemingly impossible. But, her determination led her to make things happen. She calculated the cost of braces in a town 45 miles away; she ironed her teachers clothes; she cleaned houses; and she saved summer job money. Her sisters drove her to the orthodontic appointments. Her parents never went with her, and she finally paid off the braces from her own efforts. Imagine how a girl not old enough to drive could convince a clinic she could pay.
It's this determined spirit that inspires SAID to honor Dr. Darlene A. Sorrell with this year's Hall of Fame Award.  Read her full bio
